Why Little Hands?

The “little hand” on our homepage really was the inspiration behind this organization. That’s me with our son when he was just one week old. When he turned one year old, I was organizing his closet and had baby gear (brand new bottles we hadn’t used, some clothes, and other random items) that I wanted to give to a mom in need but had a hard time finding a way to do that. I did some research and talked to a friend who pointed me to the Henrico Department of Social Services, but it took a lot of work on my part to find a new home for our baby stuff. And I decided it should be easier.

Fast forward to Christmas-time, when my family and small group adopted three families through our church angel tree. We helped these families with basics like diapers, car seats, and clothes. And I got to thinking that about how as a community we do an amazing job rallying to help families at the holidays, while the need is year round.

So, I started having conversations with others who work in the social services world in the Richmond area to see if a need was there to help provide baby essentials to families in need in the Greater Richmond… and the answer was yes.

Over the last six months we’ve been lining up partners, getting all the official paperwork done, and starting to build a network of support. And now here we are – two weeks from officially launching. What does “launching” mean? It means that we are officially ready to start helping moms and children in the Greater Richmond area.

The hard work really hasn’t even started, and we hope you will help us out as we get going! We’re going to need items donated, volunteers to help deliver, and supporters to help us put on events and programs. Follow us on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter to get regular updates about what’s going on with Little Hands and ways to help. Thank you for your early support of Little Hands!
